The best gaming monitors and best graphics cards are packed with features, but one aspect that often gets overlooked is the inclusion of DisplayPort vs. HDMI. What are the differences between the two ports and is using one for connecting to your system definitively better?

You might think it's a simple matter of hooking up whatever cable comes with your monitor to your PC and calling it a day, but there are differences that can often mean a loss of refresh rate, color quality, or both if you're not careful. Here's what you need to know about DisplayPort vs. HDMI connections.

Displayport 1.2 Vs Displayport 1.4 - Electric Objects Digital Art Displayport 1 4a Vs

If you're looking to buy a new PC monitor or buy a new graphics card, you'll want to consider the capabilities of both sides of the connection — the video output of your graphics card and the video input on your display — before making any purchases. Our GPU Benchmarks hierarchy will tell you how the various graphics cards rank in terms of performance, but it doesn't dig into the connectivity options, which is something we'll cover here.

Mini Displayport To Hdmi Adapter For Apple Macbook Pro, Air, Mac Mini

The latest display connectivity standards are DisplayPort and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). DisplayPort first appeared in 2006, while HDMI came out in 2002. Both are digital standards, meaning all the data about the pixels on your screen is represented as 0s and 1s as it zips across your cable, and it's up to the display to convert that digital information into an image on your screen.

Earlier digital monitors used DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connectors, and going back even further we had analog VGA (Video Graphics Array) — along with component RGB, S-Video, composite video, EGA and CGA. You don't want to use VGA or any of those others in the 2020s, though. They're old, meaning, any new GPU likely won't even support the connector, and even if they did, you'd be using an analog signal that's prone to interference. Yuck.

DVI is the bare minimum you want to use today, and even that has limitations. It has a lot in common with early HDMI, just without audio support. It works fine for gaming at 1080p, or 1440p resolution if you have a dual-link connection. Dual-link DVI-D (opens in new tab) is basically double the bandwidth of single-link DVI-D (opens in new tab) via extra pins and wires, and most modern GPUs with a DVI port support dual-link. But the truly modern graphics cards like Nvidia's Ada Lovelace RTX 40-series and AMD's RDNA 3 RX 7000-series almost never include DVI connectors these days.

Buy Amazonbasics Uni Directional Displayport To Hdmi Video Display Cable, 4k@30hz

If you're wondering about Thunderbolt 2/3, it basically just routes DisplayPort over the Thunderbolt connection. Thunderbolt 2 supports DisplayPort 1.2, and Thunderbolt 3 supports DisplayPort 1.4 video. It's also possible to route HDMI 2.0 over Thunderbolt 3 with the right hardware.

For newer displays, it's best to go with DisplayPort or HDMI. But is there a clear winner between the two? Let's dig into the details.

Not all DisplayPort and HDMI ports are created equal. The DisplayPort and HDMI standards are backward compatible, meaning you can plug in an HDTV from the mid-00s and it should still work with a brand new RTX 20-series or RX 5000-series graphics card. However, the connection between your display and graphics card will end up using the best option supported by both the sending and receiving ends of the connection. That might mean the best 4K gaming monitor with 144 Hz and HDR will end up running at 4K and 24 Hz on an older graphics card!

The Best Tablets With A Stylus Pen For Drawing And Writing

Here's a quick overview of the major DisplayPort and HDMI revisions, their maximum signal rates and the GPU families that first added support for the standard.

Displayport Cable 1.4 Displayport Switch 2 In 1 Out @30Hz 4K@120Hz Splitter Converterdisplayport Switchdisplayport Splitter For Multiple Sourceand Displays. - Electric Objects Digital Art Displayport 1 4a Vs

Note that there are two bandwidth columns: transmission rate and data rate. The DisplayPort and HDMI digital signals use bitrate encoding of some form — 8b/10b for most of the older standards, 16b/18b for HDMI 2.1, and 128b/132b for DisplayPort 2.0. 8b/10b encoding for example means for every 8 bits of data, 10 bits are actually transmitted, with the extra bits used to help maintain signal integrity (eg, by ensuring zero DC bias).

That means only 80% of the theoretical bandwidth is actually available for data use with 8b/10b. 16b/18b encoding improves that to 88.9% efficiency, while 128b/132b encoding yields 97% efficiency. There are still other considerations, like the auxiliary channel on HDMI, but that's not a major factor for PC use.

Amazon.com: Lxjadap Hdmi Adapter For Iphone To Tv,1080p Digital Av Adapter For Iphone(no Need Power) Plug And Play, Compatible With Iphone 14/13/12/11/x/8/7/ipad Support Ios 16

To understand the above chart in context, we need to go deeper. What all digital connections — DisplayPort, HDMI and even DVI-D — end up coming down to is the required bandwidth. Every pixel on your display has three components: red, green, and blue (RGB) — alternatively: luma, blue chroma difference, and red chroma difference (YCbCr/YPbPr) can be used. Whatever your GPU renders internally (typically 16-bit floating point RGBA, where A is the alpha/transparency information), that data gets converted into a signal for your display.

The standard in the past has been 24-bit color, or 8 bits each for the red, green and blue color components. HDR and high color depth displays have bumped that to 10-bit color, with 12-bit and 16-bit options as well, though the latter two are mostly in the professional space. Generally speaking, display signals use either 24 bits per pixel (bpp) or 30 bpp, with the best HDR monitors opting for 30 bpp. Multiply the color depth by the number of pixels and the screen refresh rate and you get the minimum required bandwidth. We say 'minimum' because there are a bunch of other factors as well.

Display timings are relatively complex calculations. The VESA governing body defines the standards, and there's even a handy spreadsheet that spits out the actual timings for a given resolution. A 1920x1080 monitor at a 60 Hz refresh rate, for example, uses 2, 000 pixels per horizontal line and 1, 111 lines once all the timing stuff is added. That's because display blanking intervals need to be factored in. (These blanking intervals are partly a holdover from the analog CRT screen days, but the standards still include it even with digital displays.)

Is This The Ultimate Windows Docking Station? Meet The Accell Thunderbolt 4

Using the VESA spreadsheet and running the calculations gives the following bandwidth requirements. Look at the following table and compare it with the first table; if the required data bandwidth is less than the max data rate that a standard supports, then the resolution can be used.

Signals, however. DisplayPort 1.4 added the option of Display Stream Compression 1.2a (DSC), which is also part of HDMI 2.1. In short, DSC helps overcome bandwidth limitations, which are becoming increasingly problematic as resolutions and refresh rates increase. For example, basic 24 bpp at 8K and 60 Hz needs 49.65 Gbps of data bandwidth, or 62.06 Gbps for 10 bpp HDR color. 8K 120 Hz 10 bpp HDR, a resolution that we're likely to see more of in the future, needs 127.75 Gbps. Yikes!

DSC can provide up to a 3:1 compression ratio by converting to YCgCo and using delta PCM encoding. It provides a "visually lossless" (and sometimes even truly lossless, depending on what you're viewing) result. Using DSC, 8K 120 Hz HDR is suddenly viable, with a bandwidth requirement of 'only' 42.58 Gbps.

There's a catch with DSC, however: Support tends to be rather hit and miss. We've tested a bunch of graphics cards using a Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 32, which supports up to 4K at 240 Hz over DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1. On DisplayPort connections, most of the latest GPUs are fine, but cards from a generation or two back may not even allow the use of 240 Hz. We've also seen video signal corruption on occasion, where dropping to 120 Hz (still with DSC) often fixes the problem. In short, cable quality and the DSC hardware implementation still factor into the equation.

Both HDMI and DisplayPort can also carry audio data, which requires bandwidth as well, though it's a minuscule amount compared to the video data. DisplayPort and HDMI currently use a maximum of 36.86 Mbps for audio, or 0.037 Gbps if we keep things in the same units as video. Earlier versions of each standard can use even less data for audio. One important note is that HDMI supports audio pass through, while DisplayPort does not. If you're planning to hook up your GPU to an amplifier, HDMI provides a better solution.

That's a lengthy introduction to a complex subject, but if you've ever wondered why the simple math (resolution * refresh rate * color depth) doesn't match published specs, it's because of all the timing standards, encoding, audio and more. Bandwidth isn't the only factor, but in general, the standard with a higher maximum bandwidth is 'better.'

Currently DisplayPort 1.4 is the most capable and readily available version of the DisplayPort standard. The DisplayPort 2.0 spec came out in June 2019, and Intel's Arc Alchemist GPUs along with AMD's RDNA 3 GPUs support the standard (which has since been bumped to DisplayPort 2.1). Nvidia for its part has decided to stick with DisplayPort 1.4a with its Ada Lovelace parts.

what size canvas should i use for digital artwork for salesforce login microsoft

It’s easy to walk into an art store, see a canvas that will fit on that empty spot of the wall and know it’s the canvas you need. But, what about digital art? The canvas looks like it’s the size of my screen, whether it’s small or large. It’s so easy to choose the wrong sizing and make a mistake. So, the question is, what’s a good canvas size for digital art?

For printed work, your digital art canvas should be the same size as your desired final print. Use an inch to pixel converter to find your dimensions in pixels. The size of your canvas designed for the web depends on the platform you plan to display it on. The DPI of your canvas should be at least 150 for web work and 300 for print work.

If you plan to print your work, it really is as simple as choosing a canvas that’s the size of your desired final product. So, if you eventually want to print an 8×10 print, make your canvas 8×10.

If I’m unsure what size I want my final print to be, I take some time and figure it out. That’s how much I care about choosing the right canvas size from the get-go.

To be fair, there have been a few times when I’ve jumped into a piece of art without knowing the exact sizing first. In those case, I aim for a larger canvas than I think I’ll need. Generally, I find it easier to scale my work down when printing, than scaling it up.

This is not always the case so, again, try to figure out your ideal canvas size ahead of time before you get started.

Also, it’s important that you DON’T resize your canvas after you’ve created it. This can cause issues with quality, sizing, and overall results. So, again, decide on your canvas size from the get-go before you get started.

We have to think about DPI, which will change the size of your canvas, even if you’re still aiming for an 8×10 print at the end of the day.

Not to mention that it becomes more complicated when thinking about digitally displaying your work. How the heck do we know the size of Instagram posts?

Namaste Home Namaste Home

Later in this post, we’ll talk about what you need to consider when choosing a DPI for your canvas and how it impacts its size. That said, if you couldn’t care less about how all of this works and just want a clear answer on what size canvas you should pick for your digital art, I totally get it.

Here’s a chart you can use. These dimensions are based on 300 DPI, which is generally considered to be the minimum DPI for print work. And, as we’ll talk about more in depth in the next section, choose a larger size if you’re not exactly sure what size you’ll want or need.

You’ll notice more quality loss when you scale a small image to a larger size than when you scale a large image to a smaller size. You still want to be in the ballpark, but be in the larger end of the ballpark.

Ok, another thing that’s important to understand is DPI. It’s really easy to get confused by DPI since it seems to magically balloon your canvas size. There’s a reason for it though and it doesn’t actually impact your canvas size in the way you would think.

DPI stands for dots per inch. As the name suggests, it tells you how many dots can fit into an inch of printed work (source). So, the larger the DPI, the more dots of ink will be in each inch of your printed final product.

In general, all printed work should be a minimum of 300 DPI, but you can go higher if you plan to print posters and larger pieces of work.

Best Canvas Size For Digital Art

If you change your DPI after you’ve entered in your pixels, it will change your pixel number. The reason for this is because DPI (or PPI) measures your dots per inch. So, if you increase it, your canvas will need more pixels to get the job done.

As long as you know the desired size of your final product and maintain a minimum of 300 DPI, you can let your design program decide what your pixel x pixel resolution will be. As you saw in the chart above, your inch x inch size relates to a specific pixel x pixel size, so you’ll be fine as long as you know one or the other.

Pixels and inches are just two different ways to measure something. One will always translate to the other as long as the DPI remains consistent.

It’s much easier to know that you want a 8 x 10” print than a 2400 x 300 pixel canvas. As long as you have your DPI set correctly, your design program will pick the appropriate amount of pixels for the inches you need.

The reverse works as well. If you only know the pixels you need, your design program will turn it into the proper inches.

Personally, I just set my design to 300 DPI and just go with whatever number I already know. If I’m designing for the web, I use the pixels that are appropriate for a website. If I’m designing for print, I use the inches that I’ll be printing at. The rest just works itself out.

Digital Chess Game Canvas Matte Finish Home Décor Wall Décor Size 40 Cm

Unless you’re designing a billboard, you probably won’t have to worry about creating a canvas so big that your design program can’t handle it. That said, it’s an important thing to keep in mind, since the maximum size for a design varies from iPad to iPad.

It’s hard to say what the max canvas sizes for varying programs are because it will depend on the DPI . In general, many programs can tolerate a certain number of pixels per design. Remember that the higher your DPI, the more pixels you’ll need. This means that you’ll get fewer inches of canvas space the higher your DPI is.

It’s more likely you’ll run into this issue with an iPad or tablet program because there is only so much that these small devices can support. For example, if you’re using Procreate, you might struggle to get a 24 x 36” poster size at 300 DPI.

Digital Image Development Week 09 Image Size Dialog ...

If you run into issues with maxing out your design program’s capacity, lower the DPI as much as you feel comfortable lowering it. While 300 DPI is recommended for print, anything above 150 DPI tends to print well. Talk with your printer and do a test print to see how low you can get your DPI while still getting the best print results.

If you plan to post your art on social media platforms, it can be good to review their image guidelines prior to deciding on your canvas size.

Choosing the right canvas size for your digital art is more complicated than walking into an art store and picking the canvas that will fill the blank spot on your wall. With some practice though, it will come easily and naturally.

The Best Canvas Size And Resolution For Digital Art

Simply choose your DPI and then size your canvas based upon what you’ll need as a final product. Luckily, with the magic of technology, our design programs will take it from there and deliver you the digital canvas that you need.

Digital art refers to any artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or prestation process. It can also refer to computational art that uses and gages with digital media.

What Is Digital Art?

John Whitney, a pioneer of computer graphics, developed the first computer-gerated art in the early 1960s by utilizing mathematical operations to create art.

Andy Warhol created digital art using an Amiga where the computer was publicly introduced at the Lincoln Cter, New York, in July 1985. An image of Debbie Harry was captured in monochrome from a video camera and digitized into a graphics program called ProPaint. Warhol manipulated the image by adding color by using flood fills.

Digital art can be purely computer-gerated (such as fractals and algorithmic art) or tak from other sources, such as a scanned photograph or an image drawn using vector graphics software using a mouse or graphics tablet. Artworks are considered digital paintings wh created similarly to non-digital paintings but using software on a computer platform and digitally outputting the resulting image as painted on canvas.

Amidst varied opinions on the pros and cons of digital technology on the arts, there seems to be a strong conssus within the digital art community that it has created a "vast expansion of the creative sphere", i.e., that it has greatly broaded the creative opportunities available to professional and non-professional artists alike.

Digital visual art consists of either 2D visual information displayed on an electronic visual display or information mathematically translated into 3D information viewed through perspective projection on an electronic visual display. The simplest is 2D computer graphics which reflect how you might draw using a pcil and a piece of paper. In this case, however, the image is on the computer scre, and the instrumt you draw with might be a tablet stylus or a mouse. What is gerated on your scre might appear to be drawn with a pcil, p, or paintbrush. The second kind is 3D computer graphics, where the scre becomes a window into a virtual vironmt, where you arrange objects to be "photographed" by the computer. Typically 2D computer graphics use raster graphics as their primary means of source data represtations, whereas 3D computer graphics use vector graphics in the creation of immersive virtual reality installations. A possible third paradigm is to gerate art in 2D or 3D tirely through the execution of algorithms coded into computer programs. This can be considered the native art form of the computer, and an introduction to the history of which is available in an interview with computer art pioneer Frieder Nake.

To create three-dimsional objects and sces for use in various media such as film, television, print, rapid prototyping, games/simulations, and special visual effects.

There are many software programs for doing this. The technology can able collaboration, lding itself to sharing and augmting by a creative effort similar to the op source movemt and the creative commons in which users can collaborate on a project to create art.

Computer-gerated animations are animations created with a computer from digital models created by 3D artists or procedurally gerated. The term is usually applied to works created tirely with a computer. Movies make heavy use of computer-gerated graphics; they are called computer-gerated imagery (CGI) in the film industry. In the 1990s and early 2000s, CGI advanced ough that, for the first time, it was possible to create realistic 3D computer animation, although films had be using extsive computer images since the mid-70s. A number of modern films have be noted for their heavy use of photo-realistic CGI.

Mainly refers to the process of creating paintings on computer software based on computers or graphic tables. Through pixel simulation, digital brushes in digital software (see the software in Digital painting) can imitate traditional painting paints and tools, such as oil, acrylic acid, pastel, charcoal, and airbrush. Users of the software can also customize the pixel size to achieve a unique visual effect (customized brushes).

Since their design in 2014, some artists have created artwork using a gerative adversarial network (GAN), which is a machine learning framework that allows two "algorithms" to compete with each other and iterate.

It is usually used to let the computer find the best solution by itself. It can be used to gerate pictures that have visual effects similar to traditional fine art. The esstial idea of image gerators is that people can use text descriptions to let AI convert their text into visual picture contt. Anyone can turn their language into a painting through a picture gerator.

And some artists can use image gerators to gerate their paintings instead of drawing from scratch, and th they use the gerated paintings as a basis to improve them and finally create new digital paintings. This greatly reduces the threshold of painting and challges the traditional definition of painting art.

For example, the contt can be a sce's contt, characters, weather, character relationships, specific items, etc. It can also include selecting a specific artist style, scre style, image pixel size, brightness, etc. Th picture gerators will return several similar pictures

In contemporary art, the term digital art is used primarily to describe visual art that is made with digital tools, and also is highly computational, and explicitly gages with digital technologies. Art historian Christiane Paul writes that it "is highly problematic to classify all art that makes use of digital technologies somewhere in its production and dissemination process as digital art since it makes it almost impossible to arrive at any unifying statemt about the art form.

Digital installation art constitutes a broad field of activity and incorporates many forms. Some resemble video installations, particularly large-scale works involving projections and live video capture. By using projection techniques that hance an audice's impression of ssory velopmt, many digital installations attempt to create immersive vironmts. Others go ev further and attempt to facilitate a complete immersion in virtual realms. This type of installation is gerally site-specific, scalable, and without fixed dimsionality, meaning it can be reconfigured to accommodate differt prestation spaces.
