It’s time for My Most Favoritest Games of 2014, arguably the most definitive list of video game opinions published today in the Central Florida area. These feelings can’t be beat.
I have neither the time, nor the will to sample all of the big new releases in a given year. These are merely my favorite selections of the titles I actually got around to playing.
THE MOST FAVORITEST: “Alien: Isolation” (multi-platform; rated Mature). I hated this game. It was 20 hours of unrelenting tension and fear and grisly death at the hands of one of the most iconic movie monsters in sci-fi history.

Its Xenomorph was a largely unpredictable killing machine that could not be stopped by the weapons available to you. It prowled the dark corridors of Sevastopol station and lurked in the air vents waiting for you to pass underneath.
I spent far too much time cowering in lockers and hiding under tables, listening to its terrifying footsteps thump around the room, desperate for the thing to just go away. Even as the game gradually offered more weapons and tools to keep the alien at bay, the feeling of dread never
But all of that mental torture was exhilarating. Here was a game that finally did real justice to the “Alien” franchise, presenting the beast as an intelligent and elusive predator that killed you for your mistakes.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising
I’ll never forget the time I absentmindedly beat on a wall — making far too much noise — and watched in horror as the thing uncoiled from a hole in the ceiling and pounced on me. The last thing I saw were those awful razor teeth.
“Isolation” was a treat for its atmosphere. Sevastopol, the distant space station where the game takes place, absolutely nailed the unique look and feel of the original “Alien” movie.
It was a late 1970s vision of the future: a grim, industrial complex with steam-filled hallways, padded walls and crude computers. Ridley Scott would be proud.

Admittedly, “Isolation” could be frustrating at times, and I often found myself putting it down after an hour or so to give my nerves a rest.
Yet it was the most thrilling and memorable game I played all year. Some games give you achievements, “Alien: Isolation” gives you post-traumatic stress.
MY SLIGHTLY LESS FAVORITESTS: “Far Cry 4” (multi-platform; rated Mature). Easily the best installment in the “Far Cry” series, with its gorgeous Himalayan setting, finely-tuned action and huge assortment of fun open world diversions.

League of Legends developer Riot Games has applied its vibrant and exciting character design ethos towards this punishingly precise first-person shooter. The result is a tightly tactical team-based game with a miniscule time to kill, a defined art-style, and heroes with a whole lot of character. Getting involved with competitive games of Valorant is exhilarating, and you'll need teamwork and communication to be on point to survive them – rounds of Valorant can often be won or lost by a degree of milliseconds and millimeters. It isn't the most approachable FPS on this list, but if you can get a handle on Valorant you'll find that there's nothing quite like it.

Rainbow Six Siege is not for the faint of heart, it's tense and it's precise, popping your head around the wrong corner will end your match in no time at all, so you have to be careful and you have to be sure. The defending team gets one minute to set up shop, mount their defenses, and plan their tactics until the attackers are unleashed to put paid to all that. Ubisoft has done fantastic work to transform Rainbow Six into a suspenseful, round-based PvP shooter and the experience that exists today is a truly multiplayer behemoth. Few other games are able to match the level of nervousness and tension that Rainbow Six Siege can generate.
